What next?

We have all been through so much this year. A lot of us have struggled with ill health, the unexpected, constant change and disappointment. So many cancellations and disruptions. But what are we doing with all this? What next? I heard a comment this week that there will be a new BC, life Before Covid. It doesn’t look like things will be going back to normal anytime soon.

One thing that really struck me was that nothing turned out as I expected. I started a new piece of work, it seemed very straightforward but it was soon turned upside down and abandoned in mid flow. It feels like there are important forces at work beyond our own little worlds that we know very little about. Life is going to happen with or without us! So how can we deal with this going forward and cope better with what is next?

Accept what is

I think the more we can accept what is happening and not try to and change it, control it or manipulate it the more we will succeed.

Take one day at a time

On a zoom call yesterday, we were talking about our plans for 2021 and then soon realised the conversation was a waste of time! We can’t make a lot of plans so what can we do? I would like to think that we can feel our way through 2021. Each morning my dog steps outside and the first thing she does is sniff the air. It is her way of making sense of the world around her. I am wondering if I might be able to do something similar!

Tune in

Probably the most important thing for my sanity this year has been meditating every day. It seems to put things into perspective. When I trained as a stress reduction facilitator, I learned that stress reduction exercises are highly effective, but there is a catch. To gain the benefit you need to do them every day. The bonus is if you do something every day the benefits start to accumulate and change your view of the world quite dramatically.

Have some fun

I know things are bad when I get very serious and feel heavy. It is so easy to get stuck on the news but it is our choice to let the media in. What would it be like if we watched more comedies and less news?

What do you want more of next year?
